CHASS kicks against calls for closure of Senior High Schools

National Secretary for (CHASS), Kwame Owusu Aduomi, says calls for the closure of reopened Senior High Schools (SHS) cannot be substantiated.
This comes after over 55 of students of Accra Girls’ Senior High School and other Senior High Schools tested positive for coronavirus.
Following the development, some unions including the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) have called on government to close down schools.
NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, said the present development raised concerns of fear over what may be happening in other schools across the West African country.
The National Council of Parents Teachers Association (NCPTA) have also called on government to consider closing down all reopened Senior High Schools (SHS) to prevent further spread of the Covid -19 pandemic.
A statement signed by the National President for The National Council of Parents Teachers Association (NCPTA), Alex Danso, noted that in the current circumstances, the children are psychologically unstable and would therefore not be of sound mind to write the WASSCE and BECE examination and come out successfully.
The NCPTA is calling on government to postpone the WASSCE and BECE examinations until the situation is brought under control.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, National Secretary for CHASS, Kwame Owusu Aduomi, who holds an opposing view said there is no cause for alarm.
According to him, the difference between covid-19 and other diseases is the fact that a cure has not been found yet.
“We need to listen to the professionals, I have always been saying this. Yesterday I heard that Accra Girls had recorded over 55 cases, are they dead?… We need to curb the pollution out there. What are the children going to do at home?  I don’t know the grounds on which these people calling for the closure of schools are basing their argument. The PTA do not live in the schools with us. We have a controlled environment and I can confidently say that the students are safer in schools than outside the school,” he said
