Channel extra GETFund cash to student Loan Fund – NUGs

Financial Secretary for National Union of Ghana Students, Peter Darkwah, has asked government to augment the Student Loan Trust Fund with excess money from GETFund instead of  sponsoring Members of Parliament.
Minister for Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh and others have been in the news for receiving a US$11,200 GETfund scholarship to study in Harvard and other Universities.
Dr Opoku Prempeh and other politicians have been accused of receiving funding for their studies abroad.
Per the report, Dr Opoku Prempeh received US$11,200 to study National and International Security at Harvard University and US$12,800 as tuition and living allowance.
In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Financial Secretary for National Union of Ghana Students, Peter Darkwah, says  the Student loan Trust Fund is struggling despite the 10% GETFund proceed it receives.
He explained that most people on the GETFund scholarship are capable of supporting themselves and that it would be proper for government to augment the student loans with such monies.
Speaking on students whose names were mentioned but didn’t receive the monies, Peter Darkwah asked the Auditor General to investigate the matter to the latter and identify where those monies went.
Meanwhile, Matthew Opoku Prempeh himself in a Facebook post asked the general public to disregard the news.
“I have noted, with dismay, news carried by some media that suggests that I have, as a minister, received a scholarship from the Ghana Education Trust Fund for studies at Harvard.”
“This impression is false and calculated to cause embarrassment and public ridicule. I have not received any form of sponsorship for any programme or course of study from GETFund of scholarship secretariat since becoming a minister. I have been a recipient of GETFund award in 2014 to participate in a three-week certificate programme at the Kennedy School of Govt, Harvard University,” he posted on Facebook.
