CCTV camera helps police to arrest robber at Kotoka

 

Stephen Martey, a taxi driver at Teshie, is in the grips of the police after robbing a 70-year-old American of $ 2100 and, GHC1, 407 .

According to the police, the American arrived at the Kotoka International Airport on 14th March this year at about 7:30 am and hired the service of the taxi driver to East Legon. The registration number for the Taxicab is GW- 8242-17. 

On reaching Accra Shopping Mall, the American got down to buy a sim card but left his bag in the said Taxi cab.  When he returned, the taxi driver and his bag were nowhere to be found.  The American (name withheld) subsequently reported the incident to the Airport Police KIA. 

During an investigation, it was established that the Aviation Security KIA CCTV camera captured the taxi number which enabled the police to trace the owner of the taxi to Dakuman who assisted the investigation.

Stephen Martey was later arrested on his way to Denu in the Volta Region. The Police retrieved $ 2100 and, GHC1, 407 from him at Aflao. 

A further search by the police in Martey ’s room at Teshie in Accra revealed the complainant’s bag and its contents. 

A passport and other items believed to have been stolen from another victim was also found in his room. 

The accused in his caution statement admitted to the offense.

He will be arraigned before court according to the police.
