Building theaters ‘in all ten regions’ not smart move – Okraku Mantey

The CEO of Slip Music, Mark Okraku-Mantey, says it will be counterproductive to build theaters in all the ten regions of the country.

Some Ghanaians have called for the establishment of theaters in the remaining regions to boost the creative industry.

Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts, Catherine Abelema Afeku, recently tasked the new board of the National Theatre of Ghana to build theaters in the remaining nine regions.

"We are a nation of ten regions with different tribes, so many ethnic groups, and they all have their unique cultural practices. The theatres can become the house for the display of such uniqueness as well as sharing of our diversity", she said.

However, speaking to Candy Man on the Akwaaba Show on Atinka FM last Friday, Mark Okraku-Mantey, who is also the Programmes Director at Accra based Hitz FM, said it is needless to put up such edifices in the remaining nine regions of the country.

“You don’t just build theaters just because you want to build them. Let’s be truthful to ourselves, in some of the regions, the entertainment industry is dormant,”

According to him, in most of the regions, the music industry is virtually non-existent and that build huge theaters in these areas will be a waste of investment.

Okraku Mantey   even said a place like Cape Coast in the Central Region has no vibrant entertainment industry which warrants a regional theater.

He made a case for the Western Region, but quickly added that the entertainment industry in that area had declined over the period. “It’s not like the days of CK Mann, Paapa Yankson, Gyedu Blay Ambolley and others,” he added.

He therefore suggested that the supposed theaters should be built in areas where the investor can quickly recoup his or her investment.
