Build cordial relationships with taxpayers – Ofori Atta to GRA

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, has asked the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to build cordial relationships with key taxpayers, consultants and advisors to enhance tax administration.

According to him, the ministry over the years, has been burdened with tax administration issues between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the tax-paying public which suggests a lack of a healthy relationship.

Ken Ofori Atta made the statement at the 2018 Tax Dialogue Inauguration at the Ministry of Finance in Accra.

He mentioned that the formation of the Tax dialogue is to create a forum for Key counterparts in tax administrations to meet periodically to discuss and resolve tax issues in a friendly and timely manner.

He hinted that as efforts are being made to improve revenue generation in the country, there is a probability of tax disputes increasing hence the need for a tax dialogue.

“In Africa, 66% and 36% of tax disputes were resolved in South Africa and Kenya respectively. It is therefore necessary for Ghana to put in place measures and structures to handle tax issues swiftly and fairly to preserve the integrity and fairness of the system. This tax dialogue is one of the ways the ministry is taking to resolve tax administration issues,”he said

Also speaking at the event, President for the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) Dr. Joseph Obeng, appealed to the government to enforce laws on the payment of VAT.
