BECE: Candidate ditches exams for “galamsey”

A student of Charia R\C Block C Junior High school in the Upper West Region reportedly chose galamsey over his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on Mond.

The 18-year-old student who gave his name as Anastitus Bazara, was part of students missing from the examination center on Monday when Atinka FM’s Upper West Regional correspondent, Ahmed Abubakar Saanyuo, visited  some centers .

Speaking to Atinka FM’s Ahmed Abubakr Saanyuo Tuesday morning, Anastitus Bazara explained that although his education is important, he had to go and work at the galamsey site to raise money to assist his father to roof their three-bedroom house which was ripped off by a thunderstorm rendering his family homeless.

Anastitus Bazara added that the family needed money urgently and that he had no option than to go and work at the galamsey site.

According to Anastitus Bazara, the headmaster of Charia R\C Block C Junior High School once called him a failure which urged him to opt for galamsy other than continuing his education.

Mr.  Bazara Damba, expressed his displeasure in his son for not writing the BECE. He added that although the family is currently experiencing some financial crises, his son should not have used that as  the reason to boycott the exams.

Mother of Anastitus Bazara, Cynthia Bazara, although saddened by the situation, was hopeful that his son would take advantage of any opportunity offered to resit the exams.
