Executive Director of Parliamentary Network Africa, Sammy Obeng, says although the standing orders of Parliament permit the appointment of 25 other members plus a chairman to make up the appointment committee, 24 members would have been more appropriate.
Parliament on Tuesday, January 19th, 2020 released a list of members on the appointment Committee of Parliament.
The Committee, which is chaired by Joseph Osei-Wusu, consists of 26 members.
According tothe Standing order of parliament in respect to the appointment committee “There shall be a committee to be known as the appointment committee composed of the 1st Deputy speaker as chairman and not more than 25 other members.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, Executive Director of Parliamentary Network Africa, Sammy Obeng explained that left to him alone, Parliament should have appointed 12 members from each party in addition to the Chairman to make up the committee.
He stated that although he is not condemning the 26 member committee, he was expecting an even number plus the Chairman of the committee to make the list complete.
“ Looking at the current situation in Parliament, in my opinion, although the standing order of parliament gives them the leeway to appoint 25 members in addition to the 1st Deputy speaker who is the chairman, the would have looked at 12 from each side of parliament”, he added.
