Former Executive Director for Ghana Intergrity Initiative (GII), Vitus Azem, says the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took advantage of Martin Amidu to fulfil a political promise.

According to Vitus Azeem, the President knowing very well the role of Martin Amidu in the fight against corruption, used him to gain political capital.

Martin Amidu resigned as Ghana’s Special Prosecutor on Monday 16th November 2020.

The citizen vigilante cited the  failure of the Akufo-Addo to ensure the independence of his office with as promised prior to his appointment, among others, as reasons for his resignation.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, Former Executive Director for Ghana Intergrity Initiative (GII), Vitus Azem, explained that the resignation of the Martin Amidu comes as a shock to the Anti-corruption community in Ghana.

He added that after the Auditor General, Domelevo, was asked to proceed on leave,  the only hope was in the office of the Special Prosecutor and CHRAJ.

“The Resignation is shocking to the Anti-corruption community in Ghana because after Domelevo was asked to proceed on leave, the only hope was now on the Special Prosecutor and CHRAJ. And now if the Special Prosecutor too is out, of course the institution is still there, but we had a lot of confidence in the occupant of the position and so definitely is a great shock to us and we don’t know were it will be going next”, he said.
