Akufo-Addo to win by 51.7% – Legon research indicates

51.7 percent of voters would vote for the New Patriotic Party( NPP) and its Presidential Candidate, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the upcoming election, a research conducted by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana has indicated.

The research also indicates that 40.4 percent of Ghanaians will vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama at the upcoming election.

1.4 are also interested in voting for GUM, which seem to be the third force currently based on the research.

This was made by one of the Faculty Members and a researcher, Mr Kaakyire Frempong at a programme to disseminate the findings of the research conducted on the upcoming December 7, 2020 elections.

12,000 respondents were used for the research out of which 11, 949 actively gave answers.

The research by faculty members and researchers of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Legon was conducted at 2000 polling stations, 499 electoral areas, 100 constituencies throughout all 16 Regions.

According to Mr Frempong, 52.5 percent of Ghanaians will vote for the NPP based on their Campaign Messages, 40.9 will vote for the NDC based on their campaign message whiles 1.3 will also vote for GUM based on their campaign message.

“For voters, voting in elections is determined by the issues candidates
present to them during the campaigns. In this particular election,
policies that the future government is likely to implement (35.8%),
content of campaign messages candidates put across (23.8%) more than
management of the COVID-19 (8.2%) more than corruption (4.0%) would
shape their voting decision,” he said.

He added that, “It must be pointed out that while voters voting decision revolves around campaign messages and policies of the future government, these are issues that bother on the economy – such as employment and
improvement in living standards. Unlike in previous elections when voters
were keen on issues about corruption and dumsor, in this election,
corruption is not a critical issue that will influence voters’ choices at the
polls.”

Mr Kaakyire Frempong also said although Ghanaians were satisfied with how President Nana Addo had tackled covid-19 in Ghana, they were not going to vote for him solely on how he has managed the pandemic.
