420k filing fee scary; even capitalist NPP won’t do that – Spio-Garbrah

Flagbearership hopeful for the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, has described the decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) purge the filing fee for flagbearer hopefuls at GHC 420,000 as “Sikadicious decision-making”.

And that many Ghanaians believe the NDC is selling the party to the affluent, thus commercializing the party just a few days after the National Chairman paid GHC 10,000 when he filed.

According to him, It is quite frightening that a party that represents the poor and its umbilical cord rooted on the tenets of social democracy could put up such a staggering amount; GHC 420,000 as filing fees for the party’s flagbearership hopefuls.

And that if there is any political party that should raise its filing fees astronomically, the NDC should be the least to mention.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s political show “Simpieso” Thursday,  Spio-Garbrah mentioned that he looked forward to hearing from the Council of Elders and party members as well on the fee.

He believes that the approach of using flagbearer aspirants to raise revenue for the party is totally wrong and out of place.

The party needs to think through and devise ways of mobilizing revenue particularly for a party that has ruled for sixteen years.

“At this early stage, you do not use money as a screening device,” he said and that the party is exposing itself to a lot of public comment and criticism.

The NPP, he mentioned to be a capitalist and property-owning democrats never put up such an absurd figure.

He said if the party wants to raise funds, there is the need to set up a fund-raising committee  instead of "squeezing"flagbearer aspirants.
